Tent caterpillar infestation continues in pockets of Central New York Gloria Wright / The Post StandardA band of lighter colored trees shows the location of a tent caterpillar infestation on Song Mountain along Song Lake Road in Preble. The worst of the current forest tent caterpillar outbreak may be over, but that s little consolation to property owners still battling the insects. Joseph Heath, of Preble, is one of the people still living with the pest. Heath, a lawyer who represents the Onondaga Nation, and his wife, Tarki, live on Song Lake in Cortland County, just south of the Onondaga County line. "We looked across the lake. . It s clearly heavily eaten up by these insects," he said. Over the years, the Heaths have tried various methods to control the caterpillars on their property. They have Moncler Made In collected the caterpillars one by one. They have inoculated the oak trees behind their house. They have ringed the trunks of the trees with duct tape treated with bacteria to kill the caterpillars. "We ve been battling these things for years," he said. "It s been four years. These things have been very harmful." Heath said he thought the worst was over this summer, because he and his wife have not seen as many tents or caterpillars on their property, but the trees around them still show the devastation wrought by the caterpillars. "We had one crawling on the railing just the other night," Heath said. Richard Pancoe, supervising forester in the state department of Environmental Conservation s Cortland office, said foresters this month are surveying the forest cover in the area to note trends, such as the extent of caterpillar defoliation. "Outside of Sheds (in Madison County), I ve seen some hillsides stripped hard, and they re starting to refoliate. . I haven t heard about much defoliation Tully way, but what we are seeing are defoliation pockets." Kim Adams, state College of Environmental Science and Forestry extension entomologist, said the worst is over. The heaviest defoliation locally was in 2005 and 2006 with the most persistent population probably in the Tully/Lafayette area. "The thing has pretty well subsided," Adams said. "We re still having these pockets of significant defoliation. It s an anomaly. It s not typical." She said the forest tent caterpillars, along with eastern tent caterpillars, emerge in the spring from their cocoons, and begin eating their way through the region s trees. "They re done feeding for all intents and purposes, but the defoliation is just starting to pop out at people in some places," Adams said. Tent caterpillar outbreaks occur about once a decade, Adams said. The insect population builds over a period of two years. Over the two following years, the caterpillars fall prey to predators, disease and parasites, and the infestation wanes. Syracuse city arborist Brian Liberti Moncler Bicester said the city saw a scattering of tent caterpillar infestations last year. The Franklin Square area was especially hard hit, he said. This year, he has seen none. Pancoe had no explanation about why people are still seeing the caterpillars this late in the season. "It s a natural insect," he said. thanks to reality TV shows The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Buy Moncler (LDWF) has seen a steady increase in the number of alligator hunting violations, and says the growing popularity of gator based reality TV shows, such as the History Channel s show "Swamp People," is one of the reasons why. "One of the things that the reality shows have Moncler Tibet Vest caused is a lot more illegal hunting. look and see it on television and think Oh, I can do that, " said alligator hunter, Reggie Little. In 2008, a total of 60 citations were issued for illegal alligator hunting activities. year since then the number of citations has increased, and so far in 2012 more than 100 have been issued. "In some of our cases the subjects have admitted to watching a reality TV show and then wanting to replicate what they watched," Col. Winton Vidrine, head of the LDWF Enforcement Division, said in a release. Wild alligator hunting is big business in Louisiana, generating an estimated $12 15 million annually for state residents, according to Noel Kinler, manager of the LWDF s Alligator Program. Tourists every year flock to the state in September during its limited hunting season for guided alligator hunting trips. is allowed only with a licensed alligator guide. Reggie Little has made his living hunting gators in the swamps of Louisiana for more than 40 years and for the last 12 years has been leading hunting tours. says his job is hard enough without people essentially taking money out of his pocket by illegally shooting alligators. "It costs me money, and not just me. not the only alligator hunter in the state of Louisiana. There a lot of us out here, and anytime you start taking shooting alligators or taking alligators and shooting them for the hell of it, that s taking money out of people s pockets that are expecting to make money," Little said. Louisiana has enacted many alligator hunting regulations over the years to ensure that wild populations will be around for years to come. the LDWF says reality TV shows don t show all of the steps that happen before the hunts to make it legal. "The reality shows don t show all that. people think that they can come to Louisiana, go to WalMart, buy a hunting license Moncler Women Zip Purple Down Jackets and get a tag just like you do a deer tag, and you can t do that. mean the alligator business is so well regulated, that s why we have so many alligators," Little said. Alligators almost became extinct in the 1950 s due to over hunting caused by the high demand for their skins and meat. Kinler explains, alligators have become one of the most highly regulated wildlife species in the world. "Even though we re harvesting large numbers, we re protecting the wild resource and ensuring that that wild alligator population will be stable as we move into future years," Kinler said. He expects between 33,000 and 35,000 alligators will be legally harvested this year. To legally kill an alligator in Louisiana you need a few things an alligator hunting license; permission from an owner of wetlands where you can hunt; and a tag from wildlife officials for each gator you catch.
