Very few ideas catch on, but if you own a high street store, and you pick the right pieces to copy/be influenced by, then you have an advantage over your competitors, since you will be on the crest of the wave of the next big thing.Imagine if you backed that gauze poncho thing you described, and started making them, and then by some miricle it exploded in popularity, and you had 6 months headstart on production on all your competitors because you backed them early. You be a millionaire. Having an eye for what bits of what outfit are going to catch on is thus very profitable and that the fashion game.Design made to order for private clients, with one or more fittings.Have a workshop (atelier) in Paris that employs at least fifteen people full time.Must have twenty full time technical people in at least one atelier (workshop).Notice the last requirement (kind of important for this explanation).Even if they qualify, that doesn guarantee that they automatically get membership (there are internal politics at play). In short, very few brands can actually get the Haute Couture status. Now, this example was given to me by the designer of a former Haute Couture brand, so I cannot take credit for it:"Imagine that Moncler Outlet Ny you are going to any event of high visibility by the press, say, the Oscars. If you are a woman, what do you wear? A nice extremely elegant black dress (what most people would bear). Guess what? You will look amazing. But you will also blend it with the rest of the attendees. When the reporters are taking photos, they are looking for contrast. If you are the only female with a bold red dress you can guarantee that the attention will shift to you. You will be in the photos. An elegant black dress just increases the chance of being ignored"Now I don want to get into a conversation of the psychological incentive for grabbing attention, but shift it a bit to the economical side. If you are a movie star, there is an economic incentive to appear in those photos (movie deals, PR, etc etc).If you are a designer the same applies. If you want to make sure the fashion media recognizes enough that it eases your membership chances to be an Haute Couture brand, the same applies. Being an Haute Couture brand also exposes your to a new set of clientele. For the runway, the designer has a short amount of time to describe their inspirations of the season, explain why they are different, grab the attention of the media, and simply Moncler Lans push the delicate boundaries of claiming boldness with just looking ridiculous. If they succeed their business for the season is set. If they fail, their sales can take a plunge. It is very difficult and stressful time for them.Another factor that comes into play is that even in the case that they magically manage to be considered an Haute Couture brand for that year, they don have the same distributions channels as, say, Chanel. You may have heard of Chanel (they have stores everywhere), but are you familiar with any of the other brands that have been Haute Couture at some point? . Most likely, not. So what does this mean for the smaller brands that do not have the money to put stores everywhere around New York? To sell (as an example) in the US market, those brands need to partner with a company that does have stores everywhere. Take for example Neiman Marcus. They carry expensive dresses (some are from exclusive Haute Couture designers). You would think that the brands have the upperhand for this, right? Wrong.Neiman Marcus will order, say 1000 dresses (which are all made in France at a much much much higher wage). They will order the safe colors. that means not a bold red or yellow, because most women will feel far more comfortable buying a black dress. The designer doesn get to use the real inspirations for the season. And all that it is all done as consignment, which means that if they don sell it, they will get all the dresses back (potentially 900+). The designer cannot sell the dresses at discounted price easily because that dilutes the exclusivity of the brand (when is the last time that you saw a "50% SALE" sign in an Apple Store?). The runway show is the time that they have to get enough media attention to appear in all the publications and use that as leverage when negotiating with Neiman Marcus about where they are going to hang that dress when it is in the store. High exposure means they may get some featured place. Low exposure means they will go into a standard rack increasing the chances of returned inventory.TL;DR It is their chance to showcase their inspirations, get media exposure, reduce their risk when negotiating with a distribution channel and increasing revenue.

Why I love my Chanel Chanel was not only a visionary but an utterly modern designer, according to Catherine Leterrier, costumier on Coco Before Chanel (out 31 July), the new film with Audrey Tautou as the young Chanel finding her way in le grand monde. "The reason the brand still exists today is that, like many designers nowadays including Karl Lagerfeld, Chanel intellectualised fashion, turning it into something conceptual, something more important than just clothes, which reflected her values of freedom, equality and egocentrism," says Leterrier. "Today, those concepts live on and are responsible for the brand s seemingly unending popularity." Here, four women show us their signature Chanel pieces and explain how the style icon succeeded in leaving a legacy of eternal modernity in the most transient of industries. "My mother has a small, bright red, classic Chanel evening bag, which I used to wear around the house when I was a little girl. She gave it to me as a present the day I left for university, and it still carries a faint smell of her scent, evoking all those memories. In a way, I feel Chanel shaped my understanding of elegance as I was growing up: it makes me think of little black dresses, beautiful flowing evening gowns, and little chains hidden inside the lining of tweed jackets. My favourite piece is a cropped leather jacket I found in a vintage shop in Paris and instantly fell in love with. It was my first term at university there, and I spent my entire allowance for the month, along with my savings, in order to buy it. I had to live off rice crackers and Coca Cola for the rest of the month, but it was well worth it. Still, the piece that I cannot do without is a white dress I found in Chanel in New York a few years ago. It is very light and quick to throw on, and I always seem to have fun when I wear it. One day, I m sure my daughter will feel the same way about that jacket and dress as I did about my mother s bag, but I probably won t be quite as generous with her as my mother was with me." "I love my sparkly, silver tuxedo jacket so much that sometimes, when I m on my own, I just take it out of the wardrobe and prance around the room in it. I bought it last September after falling in love with it at the Chanel show in Paris. It s pretty bright I mean serious magpie territory but you can wear it with anything, from leather trousers to boyfriend jeans. I ve never been an impulse buyer, but I had to have it there s just something compelling about the brand. I remember Moncler Men Down Jackets Hat Purple seeing those interlinking Cs inside my grandmother s suit as a child and wondering if I d ever be grown up enough to wear Chanel myself. What s great about Karl Lagerfeld is that he has retained the classic side I found so bewitching back then but, by adding twists, brought the brand up to date. Chanel is the reason I want to have a girl; with the pieces I have in my wardrobe, it would be such a waste not to." Lucy Yeomans, 38, editor of Harper s Bazaar "As Moncler Jackets Women Down Gold Belt Zip Brown a little girl I was obsessed by the Chanel packaging on my mother s dressing table, and something about its capacity to enchant has never left me. Later, when I read about Coco Chanel, she just seemed to embody all that was stylish. I have several Chanel pieces, including a classic quilted handbag, which I ve worn with everything from a Berardi fitted dress to jeans and a leather jacket, and it goes perfectly from day to evening. The most expensive Chanel piece I ve ever bought was a long, white and black coat I picked up 10 years ago and still wear to the shows, because it seems so modern. But my black tailored jacket is my favourite piece because of the years I spent trying to find it. When you own such an iconic piece, it allows you to play with the rest of your outfit more, so in 10 years time I m sure I ll still be wearing it. Chanel seems to transcend fashion and time. Some brands feel so dead; Chanel has always felt alive to me." Virginia Bates, 66, owner of Virginia vintage boutique, Notting Hill, London "It must have been Moncler Long Men Down Jackets Zegna Grey about 10 years ago when I found myself walking past the Chanel store in Sloane Street, my mouth numbed from a trip to the dentist, and there in the window was a wonderful silver chain mail belt, designed to be worn low on the hip, with a purse attached and a tiny blue sapphire clasp. It was 400 very expensive at the time and a ridiculous piece of funk I absolutely didn t need, but I ran inside and bought it and have loved it ever since. There are periods when I ll wear it for 10 days at a time, with everything from smart black trousers to dresses. I ve even worn it over a white petticoat dress in Ibiza. Every time I do, people ask me where I found it, thinking it is some vintage piece from the 1920s and ask me to source one for them. That s where the beauty of Chanel lies: it has retained enough classicism to appeal to a certain age group, yet become rock n roll enough to appeal to 20 year olds, too. My daughter Daisy is lucky: when I m done wearing my belt, I ve already decided that it ll go to her."
